Semilong has a very rich and varied past. As you visit the local Co-op store on Semilong Road, allow your eyes to look up at the building's architecture. This was not a building erected in the fast concrete building days of the 1970's !!
We invite all entries from people who can remember Semilong of yester-year. Please contact us to tell us what you know. [click here]
One good website is the
IMPRESSIONS OF KINGSTHORPE HOLLOW OTHERWISE KNOWN AS 'DOBBS HOLE' BY REG SPITTLES
In this special project by one of our local history enthusiasts, SEMILONG.ORG will be looking back into the history of our neighbourhood. We will pick a street at random and using the census records we will see who lived in each property on that street.
This fascinating journey will start with 1901, when Queen Victoria was still on the throne, when motor cars could only drive at about 10 mph in most cities, when aviation was in its infancy and the welfare state had not been created yet, so even children as young as 14 had to go out and work.
This journey has already thrown up some surprises. For example..did you know that several residents in the first street SEMILONG.ORG will be looking at, had servants in 1901. Can you imagine servants living in your house now? Look back with us and see if your house has been included yet. If not, remember to check back every two weeks..
Look at the 1901 census here to see if your street has been included yet.
