Road & Pathway Maintenance In Semilong Northampton

The state of the road network in Semilong Northampton is a total disgrace. There is no other area with as many potholes and worn tarmac. The cracked and uneven pavements are not that much better.

It really is surprising the compensation cost alone is not forcing the Northamptonshire County Council to improve our community's roads and footpaths.

However, the Northamptonshire County Council answer is..do absolutely nothing unless it really really needs it and then just a quick patch repair which is good for a few months until residents need to ask them again for a repair to be done.

When are they going to realise, that a quick patch is not the answer? Our roads need a total relaying of tarmac.

Article date: December 2008

Update: January 2009

Northamptonshire County Council inform the county that they will stop making temporary repairs to roads. Instead they will repair the roads properly the first time.

I am sure that every resident of Semilong Northampton will look forward to that.

Pavement Maintenance

Walk along almost any street in Semilong Northampton and there are cracked paving slabs, uneven paving slabs or degraded tarmac. SEMILONG.ORG raised this as an issue and were told its not a problem.

Unfortunately, we say it is. Not only does it give a negative view of Semilong which encourages crime and anti-social behaviour, it is also dangerous.

We are told there must be a 2cm difference in the level of the slabs in order for the council to act. That may be the statutory requirement but what about the requirement to look after our community. Even less than 2cms people, particularly the old or very young, can trip over, whilst the negative appearance affects everyone.

One path which is very often used, even by Northampton Borough Council staff, is the short cut through the car park on Mill Road in Semilong. It is a makeshift (but apparently permanent) pathway to say the least. The council have thrown a paving slab into a patch of ground between two parts of a hedge. As the path is up an incline there is a step up of about a foot. [See the photograph opposite] The step up has been many a resident's and visitor's undoing.

SEMILONG.ORG have requested that the Council take a look at it and do a risk assessment on the pathway.

We are certain, this pathway needs either to be constructed properly with the step up reduced, or removed completely. As it has been used extensively, and tripped up from extensively, for quite some years, a mere taking away of the slab will not be enough as the shortcut will still be available and used. SEMILONG.ORG believe that if the alternative option is taken to remove the shortcut that the car park should be enclosed.

We, as a community together, can make a difference.
