Who Are SEMILONG.ORG?

SEMILONG.ORG are a group of residents of Semilong Northampton in England who care about the community and neighbourhood in which we live or in some cases work and want to improve it.

SEMILONG.ORG believe that part of this caring about our Semilong Northampton neighbourhood means raising its profile to highlight the area as a great place to live or work. This will lead to improvements itself as more people will want to come here.

However, improvements SEMILONG.ORG believe, will also come by highlighting issues that face residents and businesses. By facing up to these issues instead of trying to brush them under the carpet or speaking about them only in hushed voices they can be tackled and others will know the issues are being tackled.

It is for that reason that among the many positive articles, SEMILONG.ORG also include articles such as crime, anti-social behaviour and lack of road maintenance to name but a few. We are aware that some content on SEMILONG.ORG is quite controversial but believe again that they are issues that need to be brought into the open. Sometimes the style of the articles too is like taking a bulldozer into a china shop but occasionally to break the cycle of apathy and inaction hard words need to be written or shocking images or video shown.

How Did SEMILONG.ORG Develop?

SEMILONG.ORG started out with one person submitting an article to an online site. Several other people, residents and others emailed to express their thoughts and offered to write articles. From that we became `Semilong Community News` ..a site which kept residents up to date with what was happening in Semilong Northampton.

We soon realised, however, that the topics covered were more than news, it was about everyday life here in Semilong Northampton. Consequently a neighbourhood web site that told the whole truth about life in our community and neighbourhood was needed, one which was not `in bed` with the local councils and other organisations and so was able to look at Semilong Northampton with a fresh perspective, and yet was able to still give basic advice to residents and visitors.

That was the migration to SEMILONG.ORG, the neighbourhood web site for the Semilong Northampton neighbourhood and community.

We now have residents from all across Semilong Northampton submitting articles or photographs and a small number of people who only work in the area but live elsewhere have also submitted articles for inclusion.

The SEMILONG.ORG web site is privately financed and we have a team of web designers who advise us on the site, though not on the site's content.

Most of the work and meetings of SEMILONG.ORG are done online and through collaborative workspaces, however, we do on occasion meet for events, for instance when a few SEMILONG.ORG members visited ST. PETERS in Leicester to explore and establish a `Twinning Partnership`.

Due to the nature of some of the articles on the site many residents wish to remain anonymous and write articles or take images under the SEMILONG.ORG name only. This is accepted as it does not alter or diminish their willingness to change Semilong Northampton for the better, whilst improving their participation.
